Maryville University Announces Inaugural Winners of Stan Musial Sports Scholarships

Maryville and Stan the Man, Inc. join forces to provide scholarships highlighting good sportsmanship and academic excellence.

 [St. Louis, MO, November 8, 2023] – Maryville University and Stan the Man, Inc. are proud to announce the recipients of the 1st ever Stan Musial Sports Scholarships, honoring exceptional student-athletes who exemplify the values of character, leadership, and dedication both on and off the field. These scholarships, which were announced earlier this year, are sponsored by Stan the Man, Inc. and serve as a testament to Maryville’s commitment to access and opportunity and good sportsmanship.

Dr. Mark Lombardi, PhD, president of Maryville University, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to introduce the Stan Musial Sports Scholarships and congratulate Michael Gould and Lexi Gentry on their well-deserved recognition. Maryville University believes in the values exemplified by Stan Musial, excellence in performance and sportsmanship on and off the field.  We believe that these scholarships are just the beginning of the many ways our partnership with Stan the Man, Inc. will make an impact within the community.”

The Stan Musial Sports Scholarships, named in honor of the legendary St. Louis Cardinals baseball icon, Stan “The Man” Musial, recognize student-athletes who have shown exceptional dedication to their sport and community. Lonnie Folks, the Athletic Director at Maryville University, emphasized the importance of legacy in the Stan Musial name, saying, “Stan Musial’s legacy is one of honor, hard work, and discipline. We are proud to continue that legacy by awarding these scholarships to student-athletes who exemplify these qualities and go above in beyond in every way.”

Michael Gould, a member of Saints Baseball has demonstrated outstanding leadership as both a starter and team captain. His numerous accolades, including ABCA/Rawlings 1st Team All Region, D2CCA 1st Team All-Region, D2CCA 2nd Team All-America, NCBWA 3rd Team All-America, and College Sports Communicators 3rd Team Academic All-America, reflect his dedication to excellence both on and off the field.

Lexi Gentry, a member of Maryville’s 2022 GLVC soccer champion, has made a significant impact on her team’s success with seven game-winning goals, ranking 4th in team history. She has also been recognized with honors such as CSC Academic All-District and United Soccer Coaches 2nd Team All-America, becoming the first women’s soccer player at Maryville to receive such recognition. Lexi is a three-time GLVC All-Conference honoree and has earned the GLVC Women’s Soccer Fall Scholar-Athlete distinction.

Michael Barnes, president of Stan the Man, Inc., expressed his excitement about partnering with Maryville University to establish the Stan Musial Sports Scholarships. He stated, “We are honored to be part of this collaboration with Maryville, and we look forward to supporting student-athletes like Michael Gould and Lexi Gentry who exemplify sportsmanship and academic excellence this year and the years to come.”
